The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) will be on heightened alert effective Tuesday morning to thwart possible attacks by terrorists similar to the so-called Valentine’s Day bombing two years ago that claimed eight lives in Makati, General Santos and Davao Cities.
NCRPO chief Director Reynaldo Varilla was quick, however, to clarify that there is no direct threat of terrorists in the capital and that everything is just being done as preventive measures.
Varilla said the heightened alert, the second of three levels which require 50 percent of police forces to be physically present, takes effect at 6am today.
He said policemen and canines will be deployed starting today to the Commission on Elections building in Intramuros, oil depots, MRT, LRT, malls, bus terminals, seaports and other crowded areas “to check on illegal drugs and explosives.”
Varilla did not say until when the alert status will stay.
The ASG, with their Jeemah Islamiyah cohorts, carried out the so-called “Valentine’s Day bombings” that also left scores of people injured./DMS
